Personal First Aid Kits: aka self preservation in a pimp hat.

yes. it’s a f-f-f-flashback.

And this one goes out to the Jump Start 2010 teleseminar group.

As per our laughter discussions…

Prior to even becoming a mom, I was a woman obsessed with having first aid kits always at the ready.

I’m not one to go from headache to brain tumor (much anyway), but I’ll admit to seeing accidents everywhere.

Kitchen first aid kit? Check (knives, scissors, can openers, bottle openers, burns—the list is endless).

Bathroom first aid kit? Check (medications, razors, water burns, slip&fall, yada yada yada).

Car first aid kit? Check (I’ll spare you a list here.  Just take my word for the fact the possible accident-configurations are endless).

Diaper bag first aid kit? CheckCheckCheck (Please to see all the above potential catastrophes & multiply by the sheer number of places I go).

As a result, it surprised me that it took almostFORTYyears for me to realize that I’d left the most important first aid kit of all undone:
my personal first aid kit.

Please to enjoy.

Now you.

Your assignment for the week, should you choose to play along at home, is to create a personal first aid kit of your very own.

Not sure where to start?

(Ill give you a hint: think back to this post.)

Now hit us up in the comments with a couplethree items you know you shall include.

(Ill join you there as Im always trolling for new treats to cram in my overflowing pimp hat.)

  1. I have one. Blogged about it. Best thing I ever did.

  2. Merry Mary says:

Love this idea. Love it even more because you keep yours in your pimp hate. Haha.

In mine? Hmmm. My journal FOR SURE. Writing calms me down and helps me process what I’m feeling. Some good chocolate or something small and sweet, because I’m an emotional eater and a little bit of that is okay. Oh, and hot chocolate too because drinking it calms me down like coffee never will. Pictures of places and people I love to look at. Cds of my favorite songs that remind me of good times or just make me smile and want to dance. A candle that smells yummy.

Okay, yeah, I’m going to do this when I get home. Love the idea.

  3. Nan says:

    I love this idea, Miz~

Im not sure what I would put in mine except music.

I realized recently that nothing calms me like Bach.

  4. Bea says:

I must have missed this before.

As a recovering compulsive overeater this is the kind of thing I really need.

I already have it in a way yet not organized and named :)

For me it consists of letters of encouragement from friends and photos of loved ones.

This weekend I’m going to organize it all in one place.

    Thanks Miz.

  5. Helen says:

This is a little off topic but how is your class going?

    Will you do it again?

    When?

    How much is it?

    How long?

  6. Wow you are calling to me this year, girl!

From the vision board to this…I’m feeling I need to get my act together!

I love this idea. For me, my devotionals. Wake up to them every morning. I’d also put pics of my kids in there. They drive me crazy when I’m with them, but I think about them all the time when they’re away. Funny how that is. And lastly, my husband’s voice. Not sure how I’d get it in my kit, but I love to hear it when it comes with words of encouragement.

Now what to put it in…a reason to shop…hehe…:o)

  7. Terry says:

How do I get your ARMS?!

Saw you at Blissdom and I’m here for lots of help :)

    Thanks Carla.

  8. BK says:

fantastic!!!!! Man this made me smile and think I need to revamp my personal first aid kit.. never thought of it as one.. but here goes :)

Kashi Go Lean Honey Almond Flax bar – I’m always getting the munchies especially if I’m out shopping with my teen.. this helps ward off the bad food court options

L’Occitane shea butter hand cream – it makes my hands feel absolutely divine as if I had a fresh manicure despite whenever I use it. it puts me in a good place because I love my hands.

Dove Go Fresh Body Mist – nectarine& white ginger or grapefruit & lemongrass scents. I love scents and I usually spray them on sheets or in the air just to have that soothing scent for me to take me into a peaceful place. When you commute on a public subway system like I do 5 days a week you come to appreciate softer scents :)

now off to see what else I have in my kit and make some adjustments but those are 3 I can’t live without.

  9. Sagan says:

My first aid kit is both mental and physical. These aren’t necessarily things that can fit in a bag, but there you are:

    1. Visualization: Thinking honestly about how PEOPLE WHO LOVE ME see me, not how *I* see myself (or how I *believe* other people see me).
    2. A packet of tea: because you never know when you’re going to need tea to relax you or warm you up in this *(^&^ cold city :)
    3. A small notebook and several pens (in case one dries up) with which to write.
    4. Walking: because walking is my true home.

By the way, you look GREAT in a fluffy pink hat, Miz. Will you run your races while wearing it? :D

  10. Love the personal first aid kit! Can I put a puppy in mine? Iggy cures all!

  11. 1 – notebook and pen
For those moments where I just have to write something brilliant.

2 – Chocolate Fiber One bar
For those moments I am starving and about to bit the head off of anyone standing near me.

    3 – MP3 player with unlimited music
For when I just want to get away

  12. My three things in my Jules ER kit

Early morning time to gather my thoughts and write
    Fun & Laughter
    Trying something new every day

My challenges to go with this
    Sharing my thoughts
Finding fun and laughter in the tedious tasks
Sticking with the routine instead of just the excitement of the new

  13. Heather M says:

I love the idea! I totally need one. I’m thinking:
    Kahlil Gibran “The Prophet”
An eye mask. For emergency naps.
Maybe a bottle of Voss water? Because it makes me feel pampered.
    Definitely a “grateful album”

    H

  14. You’re so clever. Into my personal first aid kit I’d put some chocolate (can’t leave home without it!), some thick hand cream, a notebook and pen for random thoughts, a good book, and some tea! Does this mean I need to go buy a pimp hat?

  15. Julia says:

Okay, seriously. . . this is the best idea EVER! I am going to do this.

(P.S.: I’m glad I am not the only one with a Pimp Hat!)

    :)

  16. bjbella5 says:

Love this idea! I am making it a project for today. 1. pictures of me happy and at my goal weight (to remind myself that I got there by being happy, not obsessive). 2. an inspirational quote book for mother’s, I need to try and find it 3. Dark chocolate- have you tried ghiradelli’s toffee and almond- to die for!

  17. It’s an awesome idea! Though I’m not sure what I’d put in mine. If it was a favorite cd or food treat or a new novel, I’d want to get at them immediately and not save them for the future. Need to think more on this; either that or develop some impulse control.

  18. Quix says:

Hmmm, I’d have to say… a protein bar, a really high energy playlist on my zune, my running shoes, sunglasses, and probably a bottle of whiskey. What? I’m just being honest. :)

  19. Miz says:

first I have to say YAY!!! IM HOME. I love traveling and I truly adore getting back to my routine.

and then I shall add Im totally stealing some of your ideas (love the puppy one…not sure how that would work out).

are you saying, Quix, I should swap my tea bags for whiskey?!

  20. Mish posted about this a while ago and linked to your post. I’ve been putting together mine for those days when I truly need it and I know food isn’t the answer.

  21. Robin says:

One of my closest friends made me one of these as a birthday gift. It came with chocolate (long gone!), candles, a journal and funny note pads (I’m the list queen) – all in a cool box. I’ve since added notes from my hubby, kids or friends & pictures – anything that makes me smile. It even has a label that says “Robin’s Happy Place.” Great gift!!

  22. messymimi says:

The two things I can think of off the top of my head would be my devotional Bible and a heating pad (I get cold very easily). Beyond that, I will have to think about it.

  23. Quix says:

Don’t exchange it, pack both! :) If I was fully awake I’d probably have mentioned tea too, every workday is started with no caf tea and a big glass of water.

Although it would be interesting if I started every day with a cup of whiskey…heh heh.

  24. Stacey says:

    I love this concept!

Need to think about it more.

    For sure my meditation cds.

  25. disha says:

    Hey,
So i am currently teaching this positive psychology class, and we have been talking about inducing positive emotions, and the class has even blogged about it. I think I will share your clip with them today! Will let you know what reactions I get!
    The class blog is at:

  26. cammi99 says:

Luna Bar, mp3 player with an audio book, sugarless gum, all-purpose pen knife (with corkscrew), water bottle, running shoes and workout gear.

  27. MrsFatass says:

Oh geez, where do I begin? My iPod, for both the music and the pedometer. My new running shoes, not that I run, but I do enjoy a good long walk when I need to recharge. My laptop because I write. A coconutty candle and a bathtub, but I don’t know that it’s possible to fit a bathtub in a pimp hat. Lotion, because smooth supple skin is very soothing to me. And a nice Pinot Noir.

  28. suganthi says:

Your hat is like the Barney Bag.. seems bottomless.

I have to admit that I am pretty pathetic with organization and actually have raised two kids without a first aid kit around. Yes, bad mommy here…

I would like to have pictures like you showed and I would like to take more pictures of my child. I am not into picture taking and I am afraid I have missed a good portion of my second child’s growing phase. I don’t want to miss anymore. My husband used to take a lot with my first kid, but now he neither has the time nor the interest. I will come back to read the rest of the comments to get inspired.

  29. 266 says:

I love this idea! I may have to ponder a while before I am ready to create such a thing, but I wanted to say that I think the thought behind this is great.

  30. Nina Riley says:

This is a cool idea. I will have to find the time to put one of these together.

I would probably have some family pictures of when we have done fun things together- ice-skate, running etc. I would not have chocolate as that changes my mood for the worst! I would have a list of places that I could go to to have a good time. I love audio books , so some crime audio books would be good.

    Nina

  31. this was my favorite post of yours! in my kit would be my laptop, my journal, and my dog (hey its imaginary, right?)

  32. Fab Kate says:

LOL… I love it. Back in April of ’09 when you first posted this, I really had trouble with the concept. I mean, why not surround yourself with things that make you happy every day? Of course we all try, but there’s work and school and day to day stuff that goes on, and having something at hand to take you away from all that is sounding better and better.

Now that I’m out of the house more and doing new things, I find that I could really use something like this for some portable “down time”. In a couple years I’ll be on the road for days at a time, and I KNOW I’ll need my own personal first aid kit.

I think I’ll have a book, some high protein nut bars, my little camera (which I’ve yet to get, but WILL), a small notebook to write observations or bits of poetry, my nose flute, and possibly my little wooden frog that makes frog noises. OK, I admit it, I have some WEIRD STUFF.

  33. Sarah says:

Antibiotic ointment, Tylenol, and antihistamine gel are the most important things I keep in my first aid kits. They take care of 90 percent of my first aid problems.

  34. Lola says:

Thanks for pointing me to this post! I actually had read where BK talked about her 1st Aid Kit, but missed this original post… LOL!

    I LOVE THIS! Thanks MizFit. :o )

  35. Jill says:

This is an awesome idea, I finally got around to watching this video. I really don’t know what I’d put into mine, I’ll have to think about it. :)

  36. protein bars always come in handy whenever you need lots of protein after a heavy exercise :

  37. It seems like Ameriie is really switching it up in her latest tracknamed Outside Your Body. Amerie’s returning to her Korean roots in this single, melding R&B with K-pop! This futuristic song sounds great on my phone and I can’t wait for the video to be released.
