Being Present.

008

Today I am practicing what I preach.

Today I am choosing to spend the time I’d normally use to blog in ways entirely non-computer related.

Today I will dance to Single Ladies until I fall over in exhaustion in the name of cardio.

Today I will hoist the Tornado overhead so she can swing on the monkey bars and I will deem it resistance training.

Today I will treasure every fleeting, amazing, tantrum’y moment which is the age four.

Today I will play the Yucky Witch to the Tornado’s Snow White with nary a blog or dayjob thought in my head.

Today I will not multi-task.

Today I will be (wholly utterly & completely) present.

  5. Being present – so important but so hard to do sometimes. I hope you have a wonderful day!

  6. 266 says:

You have a mental cheer going out to you from this corner of the world! :-)

I love this post and that photo.

  8. Yay!!! I love it! Thank you for the inspiration! I want to do this MORE, too!

  9. Leslie says:

    I am joining you.
I had a trail run planned this morning alone and after reading this know that I should stay home and play with my sons.

    Thank you.

  10. Lance says:

    Miz,
This speaks very deeply to what truly matters in life….

…and just so you know…I think you rock in your role at ‘mother’…

  11. Jessica says:

So inspiring. I need to follow each of those. :)

  12. Wow. Now THAT is a challenge! Not multi-tasking? GASP! I would break into hives. But I think it’s a brilliant idea.

    Go Miz, Go.

  13. Annie says:

OMG that Single Ladies video is HILARIOUS.

  14. Miz says:

Not multi-tasking? GASP! I would break into hives. But I think it’s a brilliant idea.

and NOT multitasking…getting less done in a day perhaps but being “there” for it all has entirely changed my life.

  15. Pam Brown says:

I too am looking forward to the day ahead. I’m taking the day off from work to assist mom who is having minor surgery. Feels good to be of service. Her schedule is such that I was able to sleep in and I’m going to an 8 a.m. Boot Camp class. Feels good to be of service AND get my own needs met.

  16. Lola says:

Ok. I’m taking this as a challenge. I am going to be present today too. I have to work…but I think its still valuable. I will be present TODAY. :o )

  17. Excellent idea! Hope you and the Tornado have a wonderful day.

  18. Marc says:

    YES!!!!

Last Thursday I came home from being on the road for 4 days. My 9 year old was all over me, as I was taking off my office clothes…she had a million stories to tell me…first I wanted my space…a breath later and a big time realization let me realise how present they are, and how we (adults) just float around in our thoughts. We had the most amazing half hour together after that moment.
    Awesome MIZ!!!

on a side note…I finally put up a video ;-)
Scary stuff…I admire you even more now ;-)

    Marc

  19. Multitasker says:

I live to multitask and frequently boast about.

    Powerful stuff especially that link.

  20. Wifey says:

Love this. Its so hard to be “present.” The curse of the moms – multi-tasking. Thanks for the reminder …

    Winks & Smiles,
    Wifey

  21. Sagan says:

I think the “not multitasking” part is crucial to being present.

Last week my disordered eating returned with a vengeance. So I took a couple days and went for really long walks and did a bit of “puttering” around the house; all single-thought tasks but things that were still “productive” so that I didn’t freak out about not *doing* anything. And I found that it helped enormously. This week I’m re-building a healthy relationship with food by BEING PRESENT.

  22. Good for you! Sounds like an amazing day…enjoy the wonderfulness that is the Tornado :)

  23. Can I come play too???!!! I love that pic & I love the sound of your day. I need to follow in your footsteps! Not today but I feel a plan coming on.. :-)

  24. ME TOO!! see ya later ;D

  25. Being present is one of the hardest things I’ve tried to do. I even have gone as far as covering up my caller id at work so when the phone rings, I have to literally stop what I’m doing and just answer the phone because I never know if its a coworker or a doctor or a patient.

  26. Donna Bush says:

That was pretty much my day yesterday. It was nice to log in today and realize that nothing fell apart without my constant supervision. Oh, crap happened, let there be no doubt. But it would’ve happened if I were hovering or not. So I’m glad I got a day to recharge. Hope you enjoy your day.

  27. Love the links back to past photos…the Single Ladies video is great (what a wonderful dad).

I needed the reminder to be present.

  28. This is funny because I just made pancakes (whole wheat with flax, of course) while we all danced to All the Single Ladies. My girls were impressed that I could flip cakes and shake my booty. That kind of multitasking feels good:-)

  29. suzanne says:

And you will have a day filled with love and fun!!

  30. Aubry says:

I am with Gina. Ren Man rocks.

I also have to add that only you, Mizzy, could post about not posting and have 32 comments by 825 am my time.

  31. Aubry says:

Have to add I just clicked that yucky witch link from Halloween.

    Funny stuff.

  32. Love this. I’ve got a very busy day, but I will do the same. I don’t like to multitask and I KNOW I actually get less done when I do.

So today, even in busy moments, I will be present. And enjoy every minute of it.

  33. Nia says:

    Have a great day!

  34. Good for you! It’s so hard to just be in our day and age. Gosh, I can’t even fall asleep without thinking about work. It really does take an act of will to be present. Way to go!

  35. Fitarella says:

Have a beautiful, super fantabulous awesome day!

  36. Linda says:

I also have chosen to be present with DGD today. We will be off to play in the sunshine!
Funny! DGD’s fave song/video is Single Ladies!
    4 yo’s! gotta love ‘em!

  37. Heather says:

“Single Ladies” is the BEST song to dance to until you fall over with exhaustion EVER!

    It’s so fierce.

  38. 'Drea says:

    What nice goals for today…

  39. Jill says:

I love this Miz, because the age of 4 is truly magical and it goes away so, so fast.

Last night I kept my 4 year old up a little past her bedtime so we could draw on the GloDoodle together. It was a very sweet time for both of us I think.

Good for you for being PRESENT with your little Tornado. :)

  40. messymimi says:

    Good for you!

    Have a blast.

  41. What a wonderful day you have in store. Enjoy it fully!!

  42. POD says:

Have fun! I’m sure you’ll not regret reality.

  43. Geosomin says:

And that is why you rock :)

  44. Thanks for the being present nudge. Right now I’m trying very hard to uni-task. I got lots to get done before I get on plane tomorrow AM back to CA.

  45. Miz, this is such a great post. :) I think that it’s true in this world of computer , cell phone tech there are days that I miss out. I’m playing with my son while reading blogs. I’m sure that you had a truly fabulous, unplugged day! You’re a great mama. Wished we lived closer!!!!!

  46. Some days we just need those kind of days. Enjoy your Present day.

  47. Jill says:

That sounds like a great day, and what a neat toy (the glodoodle)! I wish they had that when I was a kid! (I had tons of fun with my magnadoodle though)

  48. omg, do you have secret cameras set up in my house? it’s as if you wrote this directy to me. i really needed to read this, thank you.

  53. Rita says:

Well said, and here I was hoping that age 4 was going to be more promising than age 3. Love the outfit, too, my daughter has just run to her room for her birthday list after seeing that picture.
