The FEVEROUS love affair with HEMP HEARTS.
Thu, Feb 2, 2012
Mizfitonline recently talked about her torrid (and long standing) love affair with Chia seeds, and I hope you’ve listened to what she had to say and incorporated it into your diet. But if you haven’t yet gone out to pick up your stockpile of Chia….get ready to add one more thing to your shopping list.
As passionate as MizFit is about Chia…I am even more so about Hemp Hearts (also known as hemp seeds).
I guess you could say it’s a feverous love affair. Actually, it’s more than a love affair; I simply cannot live without it. There are a lot of foods out there that claim to be super foods, and for good reason. But in my opinion, Hemp Hearts are the greatest super food of them all.
Okay, so you may be asking yourself “what exactly are hemp hearts” or “are hemp hearts something like marijuana?” Well, let me tell you. Hemp hearts are the shelled seeds of the industrial hemp plant, which just happens to be an innocent cousin of the marijuana plant. Related to this “cousin”, but totally legal and oh so much better for you.
I thought I’d try to match MizFit’s Chia Seeds style and incorporate a little facetime into this post just like she did. Here I am giving you the low down on some great ways to use hemp seeds:
And what about the benefits? If I would have done a video on this one, it would have been more like a full length feature film. There’s no end to the goodness it provides for you.
The oh so many benefits of Hemp Hearts:
- More Energy, Exceptional source of protein, and Natural.
- Best source of protein, essential fats, vitamins and enzymes on the Earth.
- Do not contain significant amounts of sugar, starches or saturated fats.
- Contain more amino acids (proteins) than milk, meat or eggs.
- Contain more omega 3 essential fat than any fish.
- Is a complete protein source – much more balanced than & digestible than any soy product.
- Contain about 47% oil, 86% of which is omega 3, 6, 9.
- Contains all the essential omega 3 fats required for human health.
- Hemp Hearts are unmatched in Nature for their balance of all required proteins and all essential fats as well as most vitamins and enzymes.
- Is perfect for those troubled with constipation and for those avoiding carbohydrates.
- Provides more energy than energy bars — without their sugar, milk, nuts, and meat.
- Is suitable for those unable to eat gluten, sugar, milk nuts, or meat.
- The list really does go on and on.
You might not know me as well as you know Mizfitonline, but I really do hope I’ve got you convinced to integrate hemp seeds into your diet. They can be purchased at Whole Foods and many health food stores around the country. I’ve experimented with many brands and places to buy them, and I’d have to recommend Nutiva as the best organic shelled hemp seeds on the market. Here’s the link to purchase directly from them: Nutiva Hemp Hearts.
Have you discovered Hemp Hearts already? Let me hear what you have to say, and if you’re as feverously in love with them as I am.

Well, you know I’m gonna try them for sure. My love for the Chia is now deep and real. I even mixed it with tuna yesterday for lunch (oh & there’s a chia brownie recipe post coming tomorrow).
Adding hemp hearts to the grocery list!
Good to hear it, Barbara. Be sure to let me know what you think of hemp hearts and what you plan on eating them with. There are so many options…from eating them all on their own to mixing it in with cereal, oatmeal, and smoothies.

Need to run over to Whole Foods this weekend. Our local “hippie” store didn’t have any today.
Love them mightily, and am glad to see so many good reasons to keep loving them.
Thanks for checking out the post. I’m glad to hear you’re a fan of hemp hearts as well.
Darryl
It’s great to be posting over here today, MizFit. I have a little update to this post as a few hemp related things have happened here in Austin since I sent this over to you.
There is a local company here that is now importing and selling hemp hearts. They are called Happy Hemp and can be found at http://www.happy-hemp.com. Costco is also carrying Hemp Hearts now as well…at least here in Austin, but I’m sure other places as well. They are carrying the Manitoba Harvest line and it’s great to see them exposing it to the masses.
I hope everyone gives this a try and please be sure to let me know your thoughts.

GREAT POST!!!
I hadn’t heard of them before.
Thank you, Mary. I hope you check them out and fall in love with them like I have.

Thanks Heather. Check out your local Costco as they’ve started carrying hemp hearts at our store. Be sure to replenish soon.

Thanks for the list of Hemp benefits. Pretty darn interesting. I’m drawn in by the protein facts! Gonna have to try Hemp now.
Totally….in my opinion it is a fantastic source of protein and the added benefits make it one incredible superfood.

OK, ya got me interested! Next trip to WF, I will check it out! I am not on chia due to Carla!
THX!
Good to see you’re interested, Jody. Pick some up at WF or check out Costco if you have one nearby.

Just discovered hemp hearts recently, not on their own, but as an ingredient in the best cereal in the whole wide world. Holy Crap! All organic, no sugar, no dairy, no gluten; just hemp hearts, chia, flax, cinnamon, cranberries and dried apple.
Definitely be trying them on their own, after reading your post!
Good to hear it, Tamara. What’s the cereal that you’ve been eating?
Darryl
It’s actually called Holy Crap!
Google it!
Great summary Darryl! I love hemp seeds sprinkled on salads and they make a good ingredient addition to homemade granola too. Yum.
Thanks Annelies. I have yet to try them on a salad, but we do include it in our homemade granola. Glad you were able to check this out.

I’ll be checking to see if this is at my nearest Costco. If not, I’ll be in Austin in a couple weeks. Hey, could this get me in trouble with TSA?
BTW – like the “enjoy your ride” shirt.
Hi Lee,
You can also buy them online as well. I buy directly from Nutiva (http://store.nutiva.com/aff/184A7AD18B76220132F4BCC204051600/index.html) and there are many other places that will ship them right to you.

We have a brand new product I know you will Love, Hippie Hemp Seed Butter.
Thanks for all the tips on hemp seeds.
Thanks a lot for helping me
!
Astonishingly educative bless you, I presume your trusty readers might probably want further blog posts similar to this carry on the great hard work.
i always love how you phrase things.
i have been using hemp seeds in my smoothies lately to try that for protein instead of protein powder. I’m not sure it’s a love affair of epic proportion but I like it!
This is amazing! The benefits of the hemp plant never end! These sound like the most incredible healthy seeds i’ve ever heard of, I’m definitely going to have to try them out. Its crazy that people still think of the hemp plant as something taboo, if hemp was legalized we could use this plant for everything from fuel, to paper, to organically made clothing.
